    If you haven't shut down properly then, when you start up again, you may be told in the startup messages that disks were "not cleanly unmounted". If you have an ext3 file system you may also see a journalling recovery announcement. Running fsck by hand should also tell you if the disks are not "clean".

    You might be able to find some info in the /var/log folder, too.
