    Invisible downloads in suse 10.2

    Greetings
The following problem has appeared after
I updated the system (kernel 2.6.18.8-0.7)
that also included installation of Beagle
    couple of weeks back.
The download counter is up by 20 MB within first couple of hours
of switching on, the duration for which packages are accessed
by I guess, updater immediately after switchng on seems to
    have gone up.

Zmd zen,rug and friends are absent .

    Beagled,Zypper suse updater are active
pl suggest if they are responsible
or could it be due to unstable connection to update mirror
like ftp.chg.ru :a likely scenario - several downloads are
aborted before one gets thro .
Refresh switch are set to off for all except few of the sites.

    Thanks

Switch to smart much better then updater/Yast.

SMART Package Manager - SUSE Wiki

    Faster and easier to use

    greetings gogalthrop
    Thanx for your suggestion.
I have SMART: have not used it yet.
I wonder if it a good idea to keep yast/suse updater as an alternatve
even after getting used to choice.
I would rather like it to scan for updates when invoked than
scanning every time the system is switched on.

    Thanks

Just use the same repositories in SMART as you had in YaST and then disable the ZMD service. You can always reenable it later if needs be and you can still use YaST Software Management. A quick smart update and upgrade is all you need. I find it faster and better able to resolve dependencies.

    Assuming you are using kde

If you don't want to scan for changes don't install KsmartTray. It is very aggressive in scanning.

You can start smart from the command line.

    smart --gui

will start the gui or you can totally control it from the command line.

note you must be root so be sure to su before starting

Thanx bigtomrodney and gogalthrop for tips on SMART.
have to wait for a day before initiating large down loads.

Right now some channels are off and refresh off across board.

opensuse updater is a good idea but lack of info makes it a case of

    slip twixt cup and lip.

    regards
