ATI x86_64 Display Driver 8.42.3 - Suse 10.3
I create a thread here for posting of problems and solutions with the above driver. Here are my issues that I encountered:
[the drivers used were the official ones from the ATI Website, unless otherwise stated]
(1) The command "CheckHardware --3D <something>" freezes the system completely.
(2) After executing "fgl_glxgears" I get the following output:
X Error of failed request: GLXUnsupportedPrivateRequest
Major opcode of failed request: 129 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 16 (X_GLXVendorPrivate)
Serial number of failed request: 41
Current serial number in output stream: 42
(2) "fglrxinfo", "glxgears", and "glxinfo" have NO problem; everything works as it has to.
(3) At times, I see on the right down side of my screen random tripes of colors; which annoyingly enough don't go away unless I logout [that is in other words kill X]
(4) While running GoogleEarth the screen went black, and the system froze.
(5) The AMD Catalyst Control Center does NOT work. When I type (either as root or as regular user) "amdcccle" I get nothing. I have the process running but nothing for me to see.
Note: It does not make any difference installing the driver from the ATI Repository -- except from issue #3 mentioned above.Ubuntu 8.04 [32bit] @ Gateway MX6453 Notebook

How to enable AIGLX?
I have one question: How can I enable AIGLX?
According to the "AMD Proprietary Linux Release Notes" this release of the ATI Catalyst Linux driver supports Accelerated Indirect Rendering (AIGLX).
Why though there is the Issue #2 as mentioned above at the previous thread? Might there be some problem - inconsistency with X.org?
... weird stuff guys ... :/Ubuntu 8.04 [32bit] @ Gateway MX6453 Notebook

Don't even try until you get a stable driver installed.
What card or chip set??
The current ATI driver does not support all ATI cards. GO to the ATI web site and get the driver for your chip set.

How can I enable AIGLX?
I used the following websites as reference to enable AIGLX:
(1) HOWTO AIGLX
(2) Success Stories with 8.42.3 and AIGLX
(3) ATI 8.42.3 on openSUSE - the hard way
FYI, let me also post my "xorg.conf" file. I have highlighted my additions.
- After "glxinfo | grep direct" I get the following:Code:Section "Files" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/local" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/URW" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Speedo" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/PEX" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/cyrillic" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/latin2/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/latin2/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/latin2/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/latin2/Type1" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/latin7/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/baekmuk:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/japanese:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/kwintv" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/truetype" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/uni:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/CID" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/ucs/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/ucs/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/ucs/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/misc/sgi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/xtest" FontPath "/opt/kde3/share/fonts" InputDevices "/dev/gpmdata" InputDevices "/dev/input/mice" EndSection Section "ServerFlags" Option "AllowMouseOpenFail" "on" Option "IgnoreABI" "on" Option "AIGLX" "on" EndSection Section "Module" Load "dbe" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "extmod" Load "glx" Load "dri" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "kbd" Identifier "Keyboard[0]" Option "Protocol" "Standard" Option "XkbLayout" "us" Option "XkbModel" "microsoftpro" Option "XkbRules" "xfree86" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "synaptics" Identifier "Mouse[1]" Option "Buttons" "5" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "on" Option "InputFashion" "Mouse" Option "Name" "Synaptics;Touchpad" Option "Protocol" "explorerps/2" Option "SHMConfig" "on" Option "Vendor" "Sysp" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "mouse" Identifier "Mouse[3]" Option "Buttons" "5" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Name" "ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse" Option "Protocol" "explorerps/2" Option "Vendor" "Sysp" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Section "Monitor" Option "CalcAlgorithm" "XServerPool" DisplaySize 331 207 HorizSync 30-62 Identifier "Monitor[0]" ModelName "N154I2-L02 LCD MONITOR" Option "DPMS" VendorName "CMO" VertRefresh 43-60 UseModes "Modes[0]" EndSection Section "Modes" Identifier "Modes[0]" EndSection Section "Screen" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 15 Modes "1280x800" "1024x768" "800x600" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1280x800" "1024x768" "800x600" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1280x800" "1024x768" "800x600" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "1280x800" "1024x768" "800x600" EndSubSection Device "Device[0]" Identifier "Screen[0]" Monitor "Monitor[0]" EndSection Section "Device" BoardName "ATI Radeon Xpress Series (RS482 5975)" BusID "1:5:0" Driver "fglrx" Identifier "Device[0]" Option "FSAADisableGamma" "no" Option "CapabilitiesEx" "0x00000000" Option "CenterMode" "off" Option "FSAAMSPosX3" "0.000000" Option "FSAAMSPosX4" "0.000000" Option "mtrr" "off" Option "FSAAMSPosY1" "0.000000" Option "FSAAScale" "1" Option "FSAAMSPosY2" "0.000000" Option "FSAAMSPosX5" "0.000000" Option "ForceGenericCPU" "no" Option "GammaCorrectionI" "0x00000000" Option "FSAAMSPosX0" "0.000000" Option "FSAAMSPosY3" "0.000000" Option "FSAAMSPosY4" "0.000000" Option "no_accel" "no" Option "FSAACustomizeMSPos" "no" Option "FSAAMSPosY5" "0.000000" Option "UseFastTLS" "0" Option "GammaCorrectionII" "0x00000000" Option "BlockSignalsOnLock" "on" Option "FSAAEnable" "no" Option "VideoOverlay" "on" Option "Capabilities" "0x00000000" Option "no_dri" "no" Option "StereoSyncEnable" "1" Option "PseudoColorVisuals" "off" Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "no" Option "FSAAMSPosX1" "0.000000" Option "Stereo" "off" Option "FSAAMSPosX2" "0.000000" Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off" Option "FSAAMSPosY0" "0.000000" Option "ScreenOverlap" "0" Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true" VendorName "ATI" EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Layout[all]" InputDevice "Keyboard[0]" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse[1]" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Mouse[3]" "SendCoreEvents" Option "Clone" "off" Option "Xinerama" "off" Screen "Screen[0]" EndSection Section "DRI" Group "video" Mode 0660 EndSection Section "Extensions" Option "DAMAGE" "true" Option "Composite" "true" EndSection

As I said you should not try AIGLX until you have a stable 3d driver installed. At this time you do not.

Well other then ATI drivers suck, I'm afraid not. I try to stick to NVIDIA first or Intel second. Also you are running a brand new version of Suse with newer kernel X etc. It is possible that ATI simply has not caught up yet.
