only booting into command line

Hello,

My Suse 10.3 only boots into the command line.

I'm sure that I'm at runlevel 5 (it tells me that runlevel 5 has been "reached") but instead of the normal graphical login screen I only get the command line.

I can then log in and type "startx" to get the (Compiz) GUI in all of its glory, but is there no way to automate this?

It used to work...

I also tried (as root) to "init 3" to get to runlevel 3 and then "init 5" to get back to runlevel 5, but again, this tells me tat runlevel 5 has been reached - but no graphical login.

Any ideas, anyone?

Do you get any errors? What graphics card are you using?

post the following output of running the following commands in a terminal

OK, the problem is now solved :

I stopped compiz
restarted X
uninstalled the nvidia drivers
rebooted the machine
reinstalled the nvidia drivers
rebooted.
As of then, the machine reboots into the graphical login screen.
reinstalled compiz...

All works OK, now.

Sorry I hadn't gotten back to you...but I'm glad you got up and running. There used to be a common problem with the nVidia driver where the module didn't load on boot until a second attempt. Perhaps this was the cause. Either way, you're up and running now

My bet is that your kernel was updated. Any time the kernel is updated you must reinstall all software that links to the kernel ie Video drivers VMware etc.

I had a Kernel update about 2 weeks ago I believe.

No, there was no kernel update just before the problem.

Unfortunately, the problem came back...
I then reinstalled Suse again.

I reinstalled the Nvidia drivers.
Everything OK
I installed COmpiz
Everything OK, except that the Nvidia control panel told me that the Nvidia drivers aren't installed.

A Websearch shows that Nvidia has problems with Xgl but that Xgl no longer is necessary for Compiz with the Nvidia drivers.

OK, so I uninstalled Xgl through Yast.

As soon as I did that, booting would (and will) only lead to the command line
where loggin in and typing startx will start the X server

At least I found out what it was, but the problem still isn't solved.
Just how is the graphical login called?
Any ideas, anyone?

i used to have that problem on suse 10.2after updating nvidia drivers but after i typed this command from terminal sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia (0 is a digit, not a letter!) then my problems were solved

Unfortunately, sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia didn't do anything for me, except get rid of Compiz, (until I reanabled composite etc in the Nvidia drives).

But no change in booting, still command line only.
