about installation of software over suse linux

i have the 2 operating system that is windows xp, right now i have just installed suse linux 10.2, & i dont know how to run the java programm in suse linux 10.2 & where to write the programm that thing also i dont know,
other thing is i have the java 1.4 setup in windows xp,
can u tell me how should i install java software in suse linux,
but when i open software management in Yast when i write sun in search box ,there are list of java package shown when clicked accept button of all the packages then just prompt message that insert the CD,which CD shoul i install i a confuse,other is it possible to install that pacakges from online through yast,please tell me this things because i have start my project
that is "host based intrusion detection" i have to know all things ,& another thing is which compiler shold i use for this java software in suse linux,
please give the steps above , another thing what is rpm ,why this is need
