    Howto: Install And Use Smart On Opensuse 10.3

    Hi there!
    Anybody know how to install SMART on openSUSE successfully? I have tried over and over again and I can't seem to find the SMART icon on my system.

    Hi Toxic
    Go to your console and
    su -
    Password $

    then enter this

    /etc/init.d/smartd start

    and that is all.

    smartd is a Disk Monitoring Utility. I dont think you need that. If you want to install SMART package manager then execute commands posted in post #3.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    smartd is not SMART package manager and dont restart it again n again. I mentioned that in my last post too.

    I think you miss understand what smart is. There is no icon to be found. In A console become root and type smart --gui

    This will bring up the GUI. Note you need to be root to run smart.

    You could make an icon or menu item but you would need to start root in the command I don't know gnome but in kde it is kdesu

    so

    kdesu "smart --gui" would ask for the root password before starting.

    Though in kde there is a neat applet called KSmartTray. It does the automated period checking to see if new packages are available. It also give a right click menu to start the smart GUI. It is totally much easier to use then Yast. You have much more control.
