getting online with Linux
I am new to linux but have installed the variious Window operating systems many times over. I have also installed various distros of Linux but keep coming up against the same problem, that is, trying to install a modem in order to get online.
I have now downloaded the 60 day evaluation of Suse Enterprise Desktop 10 and SP1 and have installed in on 2 AMD based computers. It seems to have installed ok using just the first 3 cd's. I don't know what the other 2 cd's are or how to install them.
I have a broadband account with Telecomplus in the U.K. who supplied me with a ZyXEL Prestige630-C1 Asdl modem which is an external usb model. This modem is very easy to install in all the Windows ops using the software that came with modem. Could anyone tell me if I can use this modem with this version of Suse Linux and if so, how do I go about it.
I also have several dial-up modems which I have tried with other Linux distros without success and I also have a DLink DSL - G604T Wireless Router which I haven't got round to installing on Windows.
I am determined to succeed this time in using Linux as I am fed up using the Microsoft products.
Heres hoping someone can help me on this.

There is lots of information on the web about using ADSL and Linux.
With SLED being a desktop distro aimed at corporate users, I am not so sure driver support for a USB ADSL modem would be high on their priority list. If not, a distro like openSuSE, Fedora, or Ubuntu would be more likely to have a driver built in.
You'll want to know some commands like lsusb (to see what USB devices are detected and their address) and lsmod (what modules/drivers are loaded.)

Your Zyxel modem is supported by Eciadsl. Read their tutorial and documentation - it's a bit tricky at first - but I got it working when I first installed openSUSE (the free version of what you have at the moment) and that was with the same experience you seem to have now.
Good luck.
PS By the way, by far the best and easiest way is to use a router connected through your ethernet.Pete
