SUSE 10.3 Problems
I have been using SUSE 10.1 for about a year & have found it excellent, with a bit of work and help from the Jem Report it will do everything that Windows will do & probably better, certainly more secure.
I have just installed SUSE 10.3, luckily keeping 10.1 on another HDD. The install was easy, no prob's, & again with the help of the Jem Report it surpasses Windows, BUT - it is significantly different to 10.1. It seems to be much faster, but, I am having trouble installing add-ons:
eg Installing Nerolinux, I used the version that I used earlier this year, it uses a SH file to install ( easy & quick) but for some reason it does not show up in the list of applications, to run the program in 10.1 meant typing "nero" in the run application facility. 10.3 does not have this facility, finding the program in /usr/bin/nero & clicking on it results in the message "permission denied", this happens as both root & usr, properties of nero gives it as an executable in both 10.1 & 10.3 ?????????
Another major problem I have found already is in 10.1 there is a facility for installing add-ons ie RPM's, Tar's, SRC's etc, this does not seem to exist in 10.3.
Can anyone help me with these problems, ie will I have to use the command line to install RPM's etc, what can the difference between 10.1 & 10.3 be that, "nero" will not open in 10.3.
A strange thing in 10.3 - when doing su in a terminal, on typing the password, nothing happens, no stars, no dots etc, nothing, but the password is recognised & on hitting "enter" you are in as "root".
These diferences do not seem to be mentioned in the included help, which is extensive. Does anyone know of a document/ tutorial that explains these diferences
Thanks regards.
