Question Missing Basic Commands In /usr/bin

    Hi,

I just installed opensuse 10.2 and I am missing basic commands like:

    apt-get
    locate
    updatedb

None of them are in my /usr/bin directory. Why is this and how do I get them?

    Hi and Welcome !

All those commands are available Debian based distros only. You can install those in SuSe too. I would suggest you to use Yast instead of apt-get in SuSe. You can install locate through Yast.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Apt-get is not available in openSUSE by default although you can install apt4rpm, but its not officially supported and I doubt that many openSUSE repos support it. You are probably best off using YAST to install packages. As for locate and updatedb, you need to install findutils-locate.

Thank you both for your knowledge. I am only used to debian distros. I am not used to doing it the clean way!

After following your directions this worked immediately and was not a problem.
