8800gt help
Hi, I have reinstalled 10.3 after changing out a 7900 gs video card to a 8800gt. Well, it seems that as soon as I install the driver and restart xserver, the fan goes to 100% and wont slow down, also I lose my shutdown/restart buttons in the kickoff menu(kickoff also seems to crash alot), and when I try and install compiz-fusion, all the title bars on my windows go away. I am running KDE.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

You didn't say which NVIDIA driver you tried or the method of installation. A new driver was released recently:
Below are the links:Added support for GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GTS 512 and GeForce 8800M.
Linux Display Driver - x86
Linux x64 (AMD64/EM64T)

I have tried the latest driver, both with one click and with the installer file.

I did a bit of searching on the nVidia Linux Support Forum and came a cross this blurb:
That was in this thread:Anyway, as many other people, we have the 100% speed fan bug, work arounded for the time being with the CVS version of nvclock

Perhaps searching in that forum would be helpful:

what about the missing title bars, i just tried to do it on a comp i just built with a 8500gt, and it does it as well (lost the restart and shutdown at first, but they came back after like 3 restarts). I have done the add rgb glx visuals (or whatever that xorg entry is) but still no luck. my friend did the same steps with his 8800gts and it worked fine, so im stumped.

Sounds like a driver bug, have you reported it to NVIDIA? Tell them what mother board and MB chip set.

It has always been my understanding that the Linux drivers don't have good support for cards better than the 7xxx line. (info from the AVS forums)
The money spent for those cards is wasted in Linux.Paul
