    Exclamation DLink DWL-G122 Configuration Problems (No Connection)

    Hi, I recently installed SuSE Linux 10.3 on one of my desktops, and was able to install the O/S without any problems. When it came to setting up my DLink Ver. B1 DWL-G122 USB Wireless Adapter, the O/S found no problems automatically locating the drivers. During the setup in the installation process (in the network configuration during O/S setup), I was able to set my WPA-Open, and Wireless Key and establish a link and activity. However, upon logging in for the first time in the O/S, I tried going into Mozilla Firefox, and the server could not be found. I tried to experiment with my wireless adapter just to see if I can get the connection working, but it simply made things worse. I don't see any activity at all, just the link (LED) with the desktop. I am unable to establish a working connection, and am afraid there is no way to undo my experimentation. My O/S recognized my adapter as Ralink RT2500USB b/g WLAN Card (RT2500 chipset) during the O/S configuration after install. I assumed I got the connection working flawlessly, however did not. Are there any suggestions that I should take into consideration here in order to resolve this problem? Please let me know, thanks.

    I have this device too, with Ralink chipset and it has performed well for me. Did you set the DNS entries? That might account for it nor finding websites. To see if it is picking up the AP, do from the command line as su:
    Code:
    /sbin/iwlist scanning
    You might want to turn off encryption too, to rule that out as an issue. Another thing to try is to manually configure your essid's name rather than just putting in "any."

    Can you post the output of:
    Code:
    /sbin/iwconfig
    and:
    Code:
    /sbin/ifconfig
    ?

    How do I enter the commands to find out the problem, since I still consider myself a beginner with Linux (since 2003). Another thing, I prefer to stick with an encrypted network since my wireless network has a WEP key which I am definitely comfortable with. I used the standard essid name that belongs to my network: NETGEAR.

    Inputting the DNS can be done with the SuSE wireless utility.

    Those commands would be entered from a terminal. SuSE uses KDE as the default Desktop Environment, so "konsole" is a good terminal to use. It should be in your menu. When you open konsole, become su:
    Code:
    su -
    and press enter. It will ask for your root password. Input that and press enter. Then, type in those commands, (or copy and paste them if you have a wired connection), and press enter. The commands will give information to help troubleshoot the problem.

    About WEP... It's not a matter of doing without it, it's just a matter of disabling it just for now to rule it out as a possible reason for not getting connected. Once you get things sorted, you can enable it. Some wireless devices have problems with WEP under Linux. I never used WEP with this device (I used MAC adress filtering), so it's possible it is an issue.

    Hi LordFlurk & asharmaearth411

    You may want to try the following as root or sudo:

    example:

    # iwconfig

    lo no wireless extensions.

    wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

    wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"den166"
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
    Retry min limit:7 RTS thrff Fragment thr=2346 B
    Encryption keyff
    Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
    Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    #
    # iwconfig wlan0 essid "name of device"

    # iwconfig wlan0 mode managed

    # iwconfig wlan0 ap "name or mac address 00:11:22:33:44:55"

    # iwconfig wlan0 key sassword or hex number code

    You should be ready to go.

    I hope this is of help

    Hi LordFlurk,

    You may want to issue the ifup wlan0 command at the cli;

    # ifup wlan0

    OR

    Have you tried to configure the interface via;

    Yast control center > Network Devices > Network Setup Method

    at this stage you should select Traditional method with ifup, if you wish to use more than one type of network interface at any one time.

    Just a couple of questions, is den166 your wireless router (access device)?

    When you initial installed Suse 10.3, were the online updates carried out?

    I hope this is of help

    Hi,

    i tried "ifup wlan0", without any result: "command not found" , neither did the configuration panel give a result...

    can it be that te "Ralink RT2500" driver isn't fully supported by the kernell?
    could it help if i install ndiswrapper?

    to your questions;

    den166 is my ESSID

    I have not installed any updates yet, becous i need my wireless connection to get that pc to the internet...

    I feel your pain. I had nothing but grief trying to use Ralink rt2500 in CentOS although it worked satisfactorily for me in Ubuntu. Changing over to ndiswrapper only brought a host of other equally perplexing problems for me. I don't know why that would be but I experienced the very same problems you are having. The Ralink based USB devices work well enough though. I have since changed over to all Atheros.
