[SOLVED] Partitions on my hard disk questions
Hi, i using 2 OS windows and suse.
i have a 80G hardisk. 60 GB was used by the windows partition. The 20Gb was use by the linux partitions.
The 3 partitions on linux are the swap, /home and /.
Currently my root partition is going to fill up. I decided to use the partition magic to take out 10GB out from the 60GB. Next , my intention is to add the 10GB into the root or / partition.
i just only want the root partition to be increase.
But i cannot force the 10gb into the root partition using partition magic or maybe there is a way which i donlt know?
I need guidance on increasing my root partition. Thanks

If you want to expand the root partition you will need to move other partitions to make space next to the root partition for it to expand into. I would use the GParted CD (or PartedMagic CD) rather than partition magic - this will allow you to move and resize all partitions.

Ok great i have to find this software to repartition it again. Any other way besides using the partedmagic? or does linux itself can partition the disk?

PartedMagic is a free download - see link Parted Magic
You can use this to resize partitions. It lets you resize & move partitions using a GUI. I'm suggesting the easy way

Here is the problem you have 4 partitions
|---Window---------|-swap-|-root-|-home-|
Now you want to take some from windows and give it to root
Reducing Windows gives
|--Windows--| unparted |swap|root|home|
root can not use unparted because it is unconnected
so you must move swap to the end of windows then move root to the end of swap then resize root.
Now we add additional possibilities. It is possible that the Linux partitions are in a logical partition.
logical partition
|--Windows--|{|swap|root|home}
now we must move the logical partition to the end of windows, resize it, move home to the end of logical and finally resize root. None of this can be automated. And the order of the partition may not be as I said above you really need to know what you are doing and how the drive is partitioned.
You can reinstall Suse and when it comes to the partitioning manually change the sizes and starting blocks.
In all cases that you are playing with partitonins you should backup any critical data.
Good luck

So i want to know that whether partedmagic will be able to increase the root partition as suggested above. Has anyone tried to increase the root partition like said above or will i need to reinstall the whole suse.

You need to boot from a live CD to resize root reliably ... doing the resize using gparted I think is less error prone as you can see impact in GUI before applying changes. As with most things there is more than one way to approach the problem. You could make the changes using parted but it is much easier to make a mistake.

... and to answer saurabh1403's original question yes I have resized partitions including extended partitions using Partedmagic without problems. I always use PartedMagic for partition resize .... example fdisk -l ouput from laptop
All partitions except sda1 and sda2 created/resized using PartedMagic ... sda1 and sda2 resized using PartedMagic. I have used the SUSE partitioner but the PartedMagic CD is easier to use.Code:jonathan@jonathan-laptop:~$ sudo fdisk -l [sudo] password for jonathan: Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x199c199b Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 894 7181023+ 27 Unknown /dev/sda2 895 3452 20547135 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda3 4031 14593 84847297+ 5 Extended /dev/sda4 3453 4030 4642785 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda5 4031 4158 1028128+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda6 4159 6078 15422368+ 83 Linux /dev/sda7 6079 6843 6144831 83 Linux /dev/sda8 6844 7480 5116671 83 Linux /dev/sda9 7481 8088 4883728+ 83 Linux /dev/sda10 8089 8696 4883728+ 83 Linux /dev/sda11 8697 9333 5116671 83 Linux /dev/sda12 9334 10225 7164958+ 83 Linux /dev/sda13 10226 11244 8185086 83 Linux /dev/sda14 11245 12006 6120733+ 83 Linux /dev/sda15 12007 14593 20780046 83 Linux Partition table entries are not in disk order jonathan@jonathan-laptop:~$

Hello,
finally, I end up in installing the open suse again, but there is still a problem. The home directory previously has been mounted as data1 after new installation and 5.8GB root and 3.4GB home has been created. but in data1, nothing is getting executed. I changed the permissions using chmod appropriately but still no file like my C code (e.g abc.out) are getting executed. It says "Permission denied" even after changing the modes using chmod and trying with root.
