If you are installing applications use YAST - you may need to add the online repositories - Additional YaST Package Repositories - openSUSE
for SUSE 10.3 add these using the community repositories option in YAST.

You may have done something in you earlier attempts. Try uninstalling and the reinstalling it may clean out what ever is wrong.

If that does not work, start it from the command line of a console box and see what errors are being thrown.

Its Terminal or Konsole. Look for it in Menu.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I don't use Gnome but I think you can get a console by a right mouse click on the desktop ... the menu should include a console option.

Its Gnome Terminal. Press Alt+F2 and type gnome-terminal. Terminal will pop up.
