Wireless Problem. Help!!!!
Hey guys. I'm using openSUSE 10.3 and I'm using a 'Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11a/b/g (rev 02)' wireless card. (thats exactly what lspci gives me)
this is what iwconfig gives me....
************************************************** *****
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
eth1 IEEE 802.11b/g ESSID:off/any Nickname:"Broadcom 4311"
Mode:Managed Access Point: Invalid
RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Link Quality=0/100 Signal level=0 dBm Noise level=0 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
**************************************************
iwlist scan gives me the following...
************************************************** *
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.
eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
eth1 Interface doesn't support scanning : No such device
************************************************** *
So I tried dmesg and saw the following line being printed several times
**************************
bcm43xx: Error: Microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed.
bcm43xx: core_up for active 802.11 core failed (-2)
**************************
What do I do now?
If I'm not able to scan, how do I get the available ESSIDs? I very very much want my wireless device working and I am pretty much a Noob. So please help me out!!!
Thanks.

if you are using bcm43xx cards, make sure you have the firmware installed. failing that, install the drivers with ndiswrapper
SLOMO: acer extensa 5235 2.2ghz,2gb ram 160gb hdd wireless
SPEEDY: homebrew desktop,Amd x2 dualcore,2gb ram,500gb +1tb( 2x500gb) hdd suse 11.3,32mb fibreline

To be more specific, you need to use the program bcm43xx-fwcutter. This is a terminal utility that will extract the firmware from the WindowsXP driver.
SDB:Bcm43xx - openSUSE
SDB:Broadcom (BCM4306) WLAN Installation under SUSE - openSUSE(Last half is about the bcm43xx driver)
The firmware that is extracted is then moved to the /lib/firmware folder
EDIT: According to THIS page, there is a script included with bcm43xx-fwcutter, that will get the firmware for you. The location of the script on my Suse 10.2 install is different than stated, mine is in /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware.Paul
Please do not send Private Messages to me with requests for help. I will not reply.

Hi
Got exactly the same problem, ndiswrapper does not support the card as yet. Checking other distro's everybody seems to be having trouble with this card.
