    sound problem

    hey,

i cannot seem to get my sound up and running on my suse 10.2

it ran fine on my windows os but since i installed suse, i cant do crap.

could anyone walk me through how to find out what i need to do to get it working?

im not completely retarded, all volume controls are up and speakers/headphones work.

im almost positive its because my soundcard drivers didnt update right during the installation, but who knows.

any ideas? if you need me to post on my sound card specs or do any checking on my computer for things you need to know to help diagnose my problem let me know.

    thanks in advance

    First what sound card?

    Ok two things.

    1) go to Yast-Hardware-sound card
to install the sound device. be sure you go to advanced and test it.

    2) If it still does not work open a console become root by typing su then the root password (note the password does not echo to the screen!)

    type
    alsa-config

you should get sound now. If not, is the sound card a Sound Blaster? If so you need to be a member of the audio group.
In Yast add audio group to your user profile.

ok, well i tried your first option. i successfully got the test sequence to produce sound, but i could not get any of my mp3's using helix banshee nor on firefox.

i tried your second one, and it said "bash: alsa-config:command not found"

im trying to figure out your third option now.

    EDIT:

ok just tried your third option, i think i did it right .tell me if i did so or not.

yast>Security and users>User Management>Users tab on top is selected. other option is group. Users> My login>Edit>Details>checked the audio box>accept> it ran its settings changing crap. then exited out. and i tried sound yet again to no prevail.

SuSe doesn't support proprietary formats out of box. You have to install necessary codecs for that. Check here and follow instructions given under titles :
    * Windows Media, MP3, and DVD playback support
    * Proprietary audio and video codecs, and DVD playback capabilities
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

You dont have to download/install all those packages. You should YAST to install packages. Is your machine connected to internet?
