    Just curious, did you upgrade, or did you remove the old KDE before installing version 4, or where you running Gnome only before?

    I've not tried KDE4 (and not really looking forward to it), but if you were running KDE3.x.x before you installed version 4, I'm thinking it should start just like it did before you upgraded. If it isn't doing that, something must have broken.

    Did you try rebooting, and did you try running startx from the command line, if that's where rebooting dropped you off?

    about KDE4

    Try logging out and then starting a new session with KDE4 as default desktop (on the lower left corner of your screen will be a menu for that) and Da,Da... you should be with KDE4;

    That's what I did, but I came across another problem : while on kde4 I cannot find way to go online , I cannot find the network connection symbol as in KDE3 (on the tray), so I have everything configured properly ( network card, DSL provider and so on) with gnome but in KDE4 the screen is pristinely empty... any advice?

    If KDE4 is not in a Suse repository you are experimenting...I for one will wait till Suse makes their version available. I need my desktop for work.

    KDE 4 is a big jump you may need to redo the .kde settings.
