Setting up an internet connection with SUSE 10.2

Hi, I am new to Linux coming from XP, I have installed SUSE 10.2 and I am now trying to connect to the internet. My modem has been automatically detected, it is an external modem, connected to the COM 1 port and I am using an ordinary dial up connection. I am not sure how to input the necessary details for the modem to connect with my ISP, or what those details are exactly. Also I can see no way to physically dial out, as you will be aware XP has the option "connect to" to dial out. I appreciate there is a lot of requests here, this is due to myself having no experience at all with Linux, thanks for any help received.

I havn't used 10.2, I went straight from 10.0 to 10.3. I also switched to ADSL via a router some time ago so don't need any of the dial-up stuff.
I'm pretty sure I used kppp for dial-up connection on 10.0, my main problem at the time was a winmodem ... which is something you don't have.

As far as setup is concerned you should do this through YAST -> network devices -> modem (the modem stuff is already setup by the sounds of things you just need to fill in the ISP information... ) your windows setup will contain all the information you need. Most ISP's provide a windows how to setup guide ... which will show you how to access the stuff you need in windows. From memory you need ISP phone number, account login details & mail receive & delivery information if you are going to use Linux for email.

You should be able to find plenty of info on the net for dial-up settings but I don't remember it being a big issue (other than the winmodem problem - which you don't have).

Hi, I've got everything set up now thanks, I'm at the stage of trying to active the networkmanager. I know how to get the command line on screen, but I don't know what to enter in exactly, would it be c:/networkmanager for example? Thanks, Jason.

network manager should be in your menu. i think it comes under kmenu -system - desktop applet. click on it & it should appear on the bottom left of your screen on the taskbar.click on it for the connection options
