    Partion setup

I have an XPS 700 and I'm trying to partion it just right. See Open Suse wants to do a Raid 0 partion and it customized it in that way. I changed it and I got this area saying dev mapping (something of that nature).

    Can you help me?

    Sorry it took so long
Ok this is the problem on my computer I can use Raid 0 which is great and I'm ecstatic that I have it. I thing is that Open SUSE wants to partion the hard drive like that. Now when I make my custom partion setup and set it up with the 2 hard drives separate. When I split it I get this device mapping error. It won't let me go any further.

The reason I don't just use raid is because other Linux operating systems don't recognize it so it heavily screws things up. So I turned it off. So my real question is that can I partion my hardrives sepaerate? Also I have both Debian and Windows (my family wants it not me) on my computer. I don't mind Debian getting erased though but I don't feel like reinstalling windows again.

I guess U would have been familiar with disk partitioning tools such as "fdisk" and "cfdisk" and it's possible to partition your harddisk seperately with these tools. Here's a link for fdisk tutorial
    http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Partition/fdisk_partitioning.html

If you're not ok with fdisk try cfdisk which is the sophisticated version of the former one.

I don't use raid so I have to look it up every time it looks as though RAID - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia raid 0 will give you speed improvements but no increased reliability. If also looks as though software raid 0 is not recommended by OpenSUSE How to install openSUSE on software RAID - openSUSE

Of the installed OS on your system which ones are using raid & is this software based?

I think he wants to dual boot with Windows using RAID and Linux not using it through a hardware RAID controller.

I don't think this is possible. Both OS's must use the same scheme. It may be possible to do it with software RAID.

Also Hardware RAID controllers are just nasty to deal with in any OS. Very proprietary.

Im sorry if I wasnt clear but I meant can a partion my 2 hard disks without raid because I cant use raid because the windows partion will be earsed and no one from my family wants that to happen.

Also they wont let me back up their files so Im sunk so the question is how to map out my drives without raid partion. The reason why Im using Open SUSE is because of this driver.

I think i understand what you're saying. You don't need to have a raid setup to use more than one hard drive in your computer. You should be able to just partition and install to one of the drives of your choice. If it is having some problems with that in the installer then make some partitions before hand using gparted or partedmagic.

Ok I'll give it a shot but the thing is a get a device mapping error and it seems that the Open SUSE is set on the raid partion.
