won't boot , but failsafe does

I turned off my machine, and now it won't boot up. It gets to the point where it turns on the firewall then a x or hourglass appears then the screen goes blank after a few moments it appears and goes blank again. and the num lock led constanly blinks

pressing alt+ctrl+f1 or f2 don't seem to do anything.

but it does boot just fine in safe mode.

I can't remember if I installed any updates before I shut it down, it's possible.

10 points if you can tell me whats wrong with it. 100,000 points if you can tell me how to fix it. Thanks

Do you have a Video driver?

    Try reinstalling.

You may have had a Kernel update so you must reinstall the driver.

If you don't know how tell use you video card.

You could get back to a non-accelerated GUI by editing (as root) the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and changing the driver to vesa

Then try to start the GUI with init 5

    100,010 points for you!

I reinstalled the nvidia driver in failsafe mode and it worked perfect.
