    graphics and desktop effects issues

    i just love desktop effects i dont know why but i just love them but it seems they dont like me i also love watching movies . i am using opensuse 10.3 kde3.5.7 and kde 4 i have a nvidia fx5200 athlon 64 3000+ processor and one gig of ram . now when i enable compiz on kde3.5.7 it works but whenever i try watch an avi film the picture jerks and freezes same thing with kde4 when i enable desktop effects kwin i all my avi videos start jerking and freezing when i try glxgears my framerate is very low is there any way i can fix this thanx

    most likely one of Three problems.

    1) You don't have a video card driver loaded

    2) you have a runaway process eating CPU

    check by running top from a command window.

    3) Your video card just won't keep up. Get a faster one. Those effects really load video.

    ok i've got the driver checked top my cpu is fine so guess i'll just have to get a new graphics card

    i'm currently using the latest driver 169, if i was to roll back to the older driver 100. would it make a difference thanx

    Maybe but I think your hardware just does not have the horsepower to handle what you are trying to do. The 5200 series is at least 5 years old. I run a 6800 XT SLI board which I bought 2 years ago and that was at the end of its production, and I consider it basic middle of the road. It did handle the cube plus movies but I really did not like the fancy eye candy and removed it after about a month. +10 for coolness 0 for added functionality.

    Thanx guess i'll just buy a new rig sometime this year now to get it back to how it was

    You just need a newer graphics card the rest of your system seems very up to date. You were just expecting too much from that old card.

    BTW I get 10,000+ FPS with xglgears with my 6800 based card.

    Ouch max i've reached is 3000fps think i'll invest in a new graphics card while i'm saving for my new rig
