    net problem on suse

    hi all.
it may sound quite funny and boring at the same time but since i saw so many threads dedicated to internet problem on suse , i thought how much damage could 1 more thread do.i am a linux enthusiast but a complete newbie at present and plan to do some command line stuff and also found some great sites for the same but then the expected happened - net didn't got through on suse.
i have an asrock motherboard.my processor is x86 (64 bit) intel pentium 4.i have 256mb of RAM(don't laugh i'll move to 1 GB soon).i have 2 OSs on my system - windows XP (sp 2) and openSuse 10.3 (KDE) that i recently installed from a dvd.internet works fine on windows but not at all in suse.i am connected through a LAN in my hostel,ie,i am a client . the server in another computer placed in my room itself . my network card is a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast.Suse has recognised it.i also have its linux driver but don't how to install it.i know all the IP addresses required.when i log into linux , an icon in the right most part of the tray beneath appears with a little red cross sign on it which.its there to tell me that the network manager is not running.kindly guide this newbie.i'll furnish any other details that might be requied . i suspect that when i log out of windows the network card stops working.is it possible ? and if yes , what is to be done about it .
This is not the first time that i'm turning to this place for help but now on i plan to be a regular.thanking all in anticipation.vaib.
