I can't get dual monitor single desktop with SUSE

    Hi everybody.

I need help setting up my desktop with newly installed SUSE 10. Currently I have a dual-monitor setup (2xDell 1905FP) and NVIDIA Quadro FX 540 vid card, which works great with XP and Ubuntu. I used a neat little program called "nvidia-settings" for Ubuntu.

However, I cannot get it out of twin-view mode in SUSE. At least I no longer have to unplug one monitor when I boot up with SUSE (which I have to do with Fedora, which is such a P.I.T.A.!!!) With Fedora, I cannot even get twin-view let alone dual monitor single desktop (which is another problem altogether). With SUSE, I've tried all the different configs, but everytime I change something in the Display feature to activate the second monitor single desktop mode and restart, it goes back to the original twin-view config.

Is there a similar program(?) for SUSE to let me do this? Or do I just need to download a driver from NVIDIA? The last time I did this, I ended up with errors on my X-server/xorg files... and I finally decided to reinstall SUSE and now it is fully functional.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

AFAIK you must install the NVIDIA driver. You might make sure you card is supported with the newest driver you may need a older one.

I'm pretty sure that video card can use the latest nvidia drivers. You can check on it to make sure here:

That did the trick. There is a site for an NVIDIA Installer "How-To" for SUSE users. Suse recommends using YaST for installation of the NVIDIA driver, and it makes it so much more simple. I had such a hard time installing this on Fedora that I decided to give up on dual-monitor with Fedora (for now until Fedora can get a simpler way of having an "nvidia-settings" type ease of use).

Thanks for the tip. This worked beautifully for me with OpenSuse and dual-monitor. I spent two weeks troubleshooting this unsuccessfully. Your method took about 15 minutes (with some goofing-off in between) and worked immediately!

If only other things can work as easily.
