First what NVIDIA chip set??
You may need to do what is called the hard install
Log on the terminal as root
type
init 3 to stop any X process
press enter again
sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia (0 is a digit, not a letter!)
this should associate the nvidia driver with the zero display
then type
init 5 to start the gui

thank you gogalthorp for replying and my apologies for being away all this time!
actually, I worked that out but I dont remember how!
now compiz is working great.
Still I have a question.
I have a GeForce 4 440 Go 64M
The thing is that in Add/Remove Applications, I have the Nvidia binary X.Org driver installed (which is said to be for the newer chips) and the Nvidia binary X.Org 'legacy' driver UNINSTALLED (my chip is listed as an older chip)
So should I install this 'legacy' driver ?
How can I find out if my nvidia chip is correctly installed ?
In system/preferences/harware information, to which i attached a screenshot, the status, device type and capabilities are UNKNOWN. WHY? is that normal ?

Look at your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file see if the driver is set to NVIDIA. You can also try running glxgears from a console window. It will report its frames per seconds (FPS). If it is low something is not working/installed I get 10,500+ FPS with my 6800 based card.
I recommend installing using the "Hard" method as outlined in the NVIDIA instructions. You will first need to install the kernel-source and gcc via Yast. YAST is a crap shoot with legacy card drivers.

you need to use legacy driver for that chipset, it is not supported by the current drivers

I attached my xorg.conf file, seems like driver isnt nvidia.
for the glxgears, im getting 6694 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1338.795 FPS
and what kernel source are you talking abt ?

In yast -software-software management
search for kernel-source check it to install
search for gcc check it to install
install them
needed to use the manual or hard method as described on the NVIDIA Suse install instruction page
looks like you are running NVIDIA but it may be the wrong version for your chipset
The FPS is not bad I don't know what speeds to expect for your card. Mobiles tend to be slower and less energy intensive then desktops.
