Vlc player installation... Need help
HI GUYS,
I have the following system configuration:
AMD 64X2 2.10ghz
1gb Transcend
Asus m2n-mx
Sony dvd writer dru-840a
NVidia 7300 gx 256 mb
I'm totally a newbie to linux and i'm using opensuse 10.3 for 1 week now... I dual booted it and successful installed...
My first problem is i don't have any internet connection. So is it mandatory to have internet for installing third party applications into linux...
My second problem is i figured that linux doesn't support required codecs to play avi, mpg, mpeg etc so i downloaded vlc player (vlc.0.8.6d.tar.gz ) from this forum... I also followed the installation procedure given in this forum...
I successfully extracted vlc.0.8.6d in my home folder... and logged in as root and started installing....
Now there is a step where i should give a command called "make"... when i hit this command there is an error... I forgot the what actuall error is. From there on i'm not able to proceed...
My third problem i badly want to learn linux... Can anbody tell me which book is good for learning linux... It would be great if u give me e-books...
please anbody out here willing to guide me...
thx in advance...

Hi the sinner, welcome to LF

Without the details of your error there isn't much we can help you with. Could you write down the error you're getting?
Are you typing the command ./configure before you type make?Linux User #453176

It looks like you are going down the road of using to source code to set up vlc. To do these you need to have some extra programmes installed on your computer (which are not installed automatically) when you first install opensuse.
However an easier way to install vlc is to use a pre-set up version of the programme. You can get this from the website below:-
PackMan :: Package details for vlc
There are two versions for 10.3 - if you have installed the 64 bit version of opensuse use the x64_64 version otherwise use the version marked i586.
There a a number of other packages that you will need to install on your system for vlc to work correctly. Some of these are library files and some provide codecs. So I would recommend that you add the packman website to your sodtware sources.
But before you can do that we need to get your internet connection problem sorted. So how do you connect to the internet? Do you use a router? A wird one or via wireless? Or is it a usb connection?

OpenSUSE concepts
I recommend you take the time to brush up on some openSUSE concepts. Especially the part about installing software and software package managers:

thank u so much guys for taking u r time for replying....
Actually i don't have internet...
I actually did ./configure and then gave this make command...
If not vlc player is there any other player software which can be easily installed and can play avi, mpg, mped etc...
As "dth1" said i'm gonna try with packman...
thank u "ozar" for providing links for online books...

All of them require that you install the propritary codecs. Suse does not ship with these since they are not "free". But you can down load them for free. So this is not easy if you do not have a internet connection.
