Need help replacing servers (DHCP/DNS)
I have 2 PC based servers that I want to replace with 2 new rack mount servers.
Currently I am stuck with non-static IPs (DHCP), but have applied for them.
I have no control over the corporate DHCP or DNS servers.
Pre-migration:
suse1 = xxx.yyy.zzz.91 = SLES 9.3 32bit old webserver
suse2 = xxx.yyy.zzz.94 = SLES 9.3 32bit old database server
suse5 = xxx.yyy.zzz.47 = SLES 10.0 SP1 64bit new webserver
suse6 = xxx.yyy.zzz.83 = SLES 10.0 SP1 64bit new database server
What I did:
1) powered down all 4 boxes
2) powered up suse5, changed it's name to suse1, rebooted
3) it came up as suse1, but still had suse5 IP, other PCs could access as suse5 URL
4) waited a while & more reboots, still same as step #3
5) changed from dhcp to static IP of suse1 and specified DNS servers
6) could now access new server as suse1 URL from other PCs browsers
7) powered up suse6, changed it's name to suse2, changed from dhcp to static IP of suse2 and specified
DNS servers
rebooted, it came up as suse2, with suse2 IP, other PCs could access as suse2 URL
9) from other PCs browsers, everything appeared to be working to the new servers with the old URLs
10) from the new servers, it was as if there were no outgoing LAN/internet access
11) on new servers, browsers stopped working, email out stopped working, nslookup & ping stopped working
12) switching them back to dhcp fixed all troubles in steps #10 & #11, but of course then the IPs were wrong

It sounds as if on DHCP they are obtaining gateway address or DNS information that you are not entering when you change them to static.
