    Angry Networking Issue

    OK I am stumped I can’t ping my Suse 10.3 box but it can ping out and access the internet just fine.

    The SuSE box is connected through the wireless with a bcm4306 and the SuSE firmware (85% connection strength according to NetworkManager)

    Oh and here is the kicker, occasionally I do get a successful ping through to the SuSE box but unless I continuously ping it, it will time out again.

    At first I thought it was the firewall but that turned out not to be the case.

    Am I missing something simple?

    Ok here is the run down.
    wrt54g wireless router
    3 XP boxes
    2 Macs
    1 SuSE 10.3

    all of which can ping each other none of which can ping the SuSE box (except itself of course)

    here is the route table for my router(x is inserted for anonymity)
    Dest Mask Gateway Interface
    0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 xxx.xxx.xxx.1 WAN (Internet)
    xxx.xxx.xxx.0 255.255.255.0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx WAN (Internet)
    192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1 LAN & Wireless

    Firewall (iptables) was completely removed and I experienced the same problem.

    Does anyone have any ideas?



    P.S: tcpdump doesnt report anything when other boxes are trying to ping the SuSE machine

    Check if you have a wired network interface concurrently on the same subnet (ifconfig as root will tell you that). If you do then in Yast set the wired card to activate "on cable connect" or "never", rather than "on boot". Can't have 2 interfaces in the same box with the same subnet.

    If that doesn't help then check these diagnostics too to see if the responses to the diagnostic commands are sensible.
