    Some assembly required

For quite a while I have been trying to get my feet wet using Suse 10.0. Early on I was using dial up with a Stratitec 56k modem. I was unable to connect using kpp or kinternet. Queries to this message board did not find a fix. Now I have a different box, am using an ethernet cable connection, and have an onboard Nvidia nforce networking controller and still have not established a connection.

On installation the controller is detected. There was no automatic sequence to make a connection during the installation like there is for dialup. YAST gets me nowhere because I am not familiar enough with it. The resources I have looked are the Suse help pages, the printed Suse Linux 10 Bible manual, and online sources. The kernel is 2.6.13.

My cable carrier tells me that they use dynamic IP's, which I am coming to believe is part of the problem. I have yet to learn the steps to configure the controller. There is some information I have about ifconfig that looks promising in that it can be used to establish persistent network interface names. I am going back in now to see if I can make heads or tails out of it. Am I even heading in the right direction?

The ability to get online is the number one priority. Once established I can more readily access the information, updates, and packages that I want. There are some other hardware issues that will go much better when I do not have to jump back and forth from Suse to Vista.

    Please. Any comments are appreciated.

If you have not already ... try 10.3 - it will have much better hardware support.
Ed: I'd retain the dual boot for the moment. During the 10.3 install it will try to setup and test the network connection.

    ...and then there is this.

Thanks for the prompt replies. I will use those sources and half expected to hear about upgrading. That is something I will take seriously.

I found this while nosing around. It looks like it will be helpful:

    Thanks again.
