SFTP slow but FTP is much faster

I don't like FTP: active/passive problems with routers and firewalls, forwarding many ports, growing lack of security, lack of encryption

I like SFTP, however my intranet file transfers are about 5x faster with FTP. Why is this? Why is SFTP much slower than FTP? Is this normal?

(ps: i don't have gigabit. I have two computers joined by a WRT54G used as a switch only)

I cannot honestly believe that I am unable to upload/attach GNU-zip files on a GNU/Linux site. I am ashamed.

sftp will be always slower than ftp, due to encryption... 5x, I think, is normal... now, with the sftp slow rate that you're experimenting, do you have any data (file size, times)?
