about installing smpppd on 10.3
I'm a 56k user who recently removed my Ubuntu 7.10 install to gice OpenSuse 10.3 a try and I really like what I see.
As many would know when configuring a modem in the control center the system asks for smpppd to be installed however since I don't have a internet connect as yet I can't down load the file to get internet connection (catch 22 indeed).
I created a local repository and disabled the org. one and downloaded the file and still get the same error I figure I need several other files including libs.
My question is, has anyone without an internet connection (under OpenSuse) succefully installed smpppd or connected to the internet without it?
I have two modemed that I also need rpm files for Intel 537ep and a Conexant that worked with the Dell .deb driver under Ubuntu F20 chipset I think.

Have you tried installing via Yast from the installation media (cd/dvd)?

That is the problem with the single CD it does not have everything on it.
Go to Index of /distribution/10.3/repo/oss/suse
select the 32/64 bit (depending on what you installed) directory
There you should find a smpppxxxxxx.rpm file down load it and copy via cd/floppy/memory stick/ etc to your desktop. You should be able to install from there. Note you may run into dependencies on packages you don't have you would then need to install them first.
The best solution is to install from the DVD. The cd just does not have everything you might need on it.

I usually find that its best to install from a DVD if you have a slow or no internet connection. The single cd versions don't have enough capacity for the devs to include all apps that maybe useful to some users.

Agreed, its a good tool. The only glitch is that it requires smpppd as a dependency which the OP is trying to install.
One thing I have thought of is that you can use NetWorkManager to dial out. You need to configure your modem using YAST -> Network Devices -> Modem and you can then use the NetworkManager applet to dial out.

Try to download smpppd and kinternet from the net, put them in a new directory, mark both and right click.. install with(donīt know the name).
Thatīs all. You must be member of īdialoutī. Maybe you have to start smpppd in Yast and start kinternet as root.
