Hello and welcome to episode 2 of 'New kid on the block'

I'm having trouble altering the resolution settings on my monitor. More specifically, I can't. My monitor is a Dell M782. I'm running suse 10.1.

The installation went fine, but I was unable to log into the GUI until I realised it was trying to set the default depth to 24, loading the GUI was successful when I changed that value to 16 in Xorg.conf. Tells me my monitor can't/won't do 24 bit, so I'm stuck on 16, that's fine.

I've done some searching on similar topics, the best one I've found so far was
    'changing screen resolution' http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/lin...esolution.html

I tried following the steps listed by Devils casper, as I was already playing with the config file genesus had mentioned.

Following Devils casper's advice, I ran the console, typed in the first step 'su -', then proceeded to step 2, which is entering 'sax2'. Here's where I'm encountering trouble.

The initial blurb as sax2 loads says it's not using my config file, but rather using it's own, and then it fails, saying there is a monitor attached, but no mode it can run in. Hmm. The exact same problem that was keeping me out of the GUI earlier.

Is there a place I can find, I guess, the file that contains the default settings SaX2 will be loading, which is giving it the depth 24 setting, which is not working with my monitor, so I can change that to 16, and hopefully get my screen out of the eye-hurting 640x480 resolution?

edit: yast reports the graphics card as an Intel i845

I can't give a precise solution as some people probably can, but each time I have a problem with installing a monitor, choosing a 'Generic Display' instead of a detected brand fixes it. I then change the resolution to my liking once everythng is running.
