how to install nvidia 8600 GTS 3D subsystem?

Hi,

I have nvidia GeForce 8600 gts graphics board. OS is OpenSUSE 10.3 64 bit.

When I checked hardware/graphics in YAST2, it said something like: "sax2 cannot start 3D system.....".

I found some 3D howtos and added nvidia into software update repositories and installed the driver. Even did a restart of X.org. Still, same problem.

Can someone shed some light on this? Thanks!

Seems like a generic problem with the 8600 series.

from console run

glxgears. report the FPS you get. If high ie 1000+ then you have 3D installed and working no mater what Sax2 reports.

Thanks for the answer.

I did glxgears and got something like 16,800 - 17,200 FPS (I let it run for a couple of minutes). This is much higher than 1000. Is this real? I need to find some 3D games to check if it runs.

Oh yea it's real. You are in business.

Try out some GL screen savers.
Try out FooBillard it is an assume 3D pool game.
