Hi,
I was having a problem with sound in opensuse 10.3 in ACER 5710 and DELL Inspiron 1420 laptops. SUSE does detect the sound card on Intel ICH8 chipset but when I play anything no sound comes up from speaker. It seems that SUSE doesnt recognize correct sound chip of REALTEK and SIGMATEL.

I first tried to install alsa-driver from YaST but it had dependency problem and didn't let me install driver.
I just went to alsa repository for opensuse (Index of /repositories/multimedia:/audio/openSUSE_10.3/i586) and downloaded the rpm alsa-driver-kmp-default-1.0.16.20080628_2.6.22.5_31-1.1.i586.rpm. Fired the Konsole and issued the commands:
su
rpm -Uvh --nodeps --force alsa-driver-kmp-default-1.0.16.20080628_2.6.22.5_31-1.1.i586.rpm

Rebooted the system and it worked.
