Resolution issues?

This is something that is annoying me. I have SUSE 11.0 installed and it detects my graphics card and everything under card and monitor properties but says my monitor isnt configured. I dont know if that has anything to do with it or what. But i dont know the exact model my monitor. But i change the resoultion there it acts as if its changing it. But nothing changes.

So the "normal way" wont allow it to go any higher than 800x600. And thats what im stuck at and i cdont have clue why. I have another computer with unubutu installed on it and im having the same resolution issues. Both monitors are older CRT monitors. But one computer has a P3 in it and onboard graphics and 256 mb of ram thats the Unubutu computer and the other has 3 gigs of ram an AMD 4600+ and a 7600 GT in it.

1) are you sure the monitor supports higher res??? You can virtually smoke an older monitor if you over drive it.

2) have you configures it in Yast?? If your monitor is not listed try one with close specs.

Some where on the monitor should be a clue to what it is.

yes i know for a fact that it supports up to 1600x1200. all im trying to do is go to 1280x1024.

and i did change the resolution is Yast. That is what i was talking about before when i said it would change it there but no affect actually happened.

And all i know is that it is a flat screen dell. not lcd but just flat screen and its 17 inches. Nothing other than that.

Surely there is a sticker or plaque on the back or bottom that gives a model number and serial number.

You must select a monitor with about the same specs. Or you could try the generic vesa. You can do the advanced setup to specify the HxW ratio and screen size.
