    DVD recording

My system has just developed a problem. I can no longer record anything to DVD. I can still record CDs on the same hardware and the system recognises that it's a DVD R/W.
The only changes that I can think of is that I installed opensuse 11.0 but with KDE 3.5.
I've been using the DVD recorder 'out of the box' since I got it a couple of years ago. I've tried it with K3B, DVDStyler and Nero and at various speeds. I've also tried the command-ine with growisofs. It varies slightly but by and large I get the following error message:
    Executing 'builtin_dd if=/dev/fd/0 of=/dev/sr0 obs=32k seek=0'
:-[ PERFORM OPC failed with SK=3h/UNRECOVERED READ ERROR]: Input/output error
/dev/sr0: "Current Write Speed" is 16.4x1352KBps.
    0/3444262912 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??? RBU 100.0% UBU 0.0%
    :-[ WRITE@LBA=0h failed with SK=3h/WRITE ERROR]: Input/output error
    write failed: Input/output error
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Have you recently switched the brand of your blank discs? I found a brand once that refused to work with my burner and I got similar messages to this. Once I switched brand everything was fine.

I've tried it with K3B, DVDStyler and Nero and at various speeds.
If it won't burn DVDs under Linux or Windows, and if it's not the media as suggested by bigtomrodney, I suspect the drive itself is dying.

If it turns out to be the media you are using, you might be able to flash the drive with the latest firmware to make it recognize more media brands/types. Check the drive maker's website for firmware updates.

I don't have MS Windows so I don't know about that but it still works with CDs and it only happened this week when I updated to opensuse 11.0. It is just a write problem because it still reads them.
Could the update have stopped it from recognising DVD-R? Maybe I'll try DVD+R.
I have the firmware update but you need windows to set it up and I don't fancy going to that trouble.
I thought it might be a bug in genisoimage or growisofs but I can't find the problem online.

Where's my brain been? I've just downloaded Wine and updated the firmware.
I'll let you know if it works

The only way I can create a DVD (data or video) is to create the iso first and then separately copy that to DVD.

Now I can't even create dvds from an iso image. I still get the same input/output error. And reading everything or writing CDs still works.
I can't believe it can be the hardware when everything else works fine so I'm not keen to replace it yet.
Googling comes up with similar errors but I haven't actually found a solution yet.
The last time it worked properly was when I put the opensuse 11.0 iso onto dvd (on opensuse 10.3).
Has anyone got any further thoughts.

Have you tried running a cleaning disk? Dirt will cause this kind of thing

    I've tried cleaning as well.
I think it must be hardware problem but it's a difficult decision without knowing for sure.
It's a good job that DVD (re)writers are reasonably cheap these days. I could end up with 2 that don't work!

As there's been quite a few viewed this thread, I thought I'd update you.
It turned out to be a hardware problem. The replacement writer works fine.
It's a bit annoying because the old witer, a Philips, wasn't very old.
