Suse 11 locked me out of root

Hi folks, I have a wierd problem that has just cropped up, basically I used Yast2 to update all the packages on my laptop and it did this without an issue, I went back to it a day afterwards when I needed to use it and found that I could not access sysinfo - wierd I thought.

So then I tried logging into Administration using the password I have had setup since the install and it will no longer recognise the root password - nor will it let me access things like the SD card from the devce notifier as it used to. I can get into konsole and root is fine there so I have been able to check dependancies in Yast again but if I log out the password is not recognised again.

I am totally baffled by it all, I am guessing that a setting or group permission has mysteriously vanished but I dont have a clue where to start looking TBH without messing things up.

    All help appreciated.

    cheers

    Welcome to the forums leigh

I only recently installed openSUSE 11.0 ... I seem to recall being asked if the user I setup was supposed to be the administrator for the system ... did you enter a different password for root during the install? can you do a console login as root (ctrl+alt+f1)? If you need to reset the root password this may help.

Hi Jonathan, when I first set up the system the user was set as the administrator, now the password for my user is not recognised but su > root password works from CLI.

    cheers

Check what groups your admin user belongs to ... make sure that wheel is one they belong to.
