Hi and Welcome !
Does your Machine's BIOS support booting up from External Device? You can install any and as many distros as you like.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Maxtor disk works pretty fine with Linux. I have five Maxtor disks in my Lab.
Unplug Internal disk during Linux installation otherwise installer will install Bootloader in Internal disk.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
