Mx2 Desktop machine is set up to use dial up but I want to use Cat5 input (hardware was installed when computer was set up).
I can't find place to make changes on (KDE version 3.1.1)
(Release is 2.4.20-4GB but I'm not sure what that refers to.)
    Can anyone help?

I have found Yast and 2 internet con. options but can't see which icon will be the one to help.
    SuSE is ver. 8.2
There is ethernet adapter configured , called eth0 & address given.
I hope this gets on to thread

Ouch, do you know how old 8.2 is. I doubt there are drivers for newer hardware, The current Suse version is 11.0

I think the hardware is even older.
Doesn't the message that the Adapter is configured, named and identified mean that the Hardware is fine and integrated into the machine????
I just can't find the bit of the control panel /yast that allows me to tell it to connect/disconnect to internet via ethernet (or wireless if there was any) (and I can't find the choice to diasable dial up either).
Can you remember that far back?
I do have a boffin friend coming (in about 8 hours) so I may find he can show me.
(I had a suspicion I might need carbon dating to date the machine when I deciphered - well I thought I had anyway - this bit of system info. - m/c i586 does it mean anything to you?? (age/speed /whatever))
Thank you so much for your help.

    Many Thanks for interest.
Fortunately I have a friend (of the friend who gave me the computer) who types words and letters on black pages with a C:\_ prompt so I now have www via ethernet http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/ima...icon_smile.gif
(after a bit of fiddling and try this, try that etc. http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/ima...n_confused.gif
) but no more knowledge on how to use Linux (otherwise I'd share it!).
    Thanks again AlanJ

You guys will not believe this, but I actually have a box for SuSE Linux Professional 8.2 sitting not more than 10 feet away from me. I think it was the first box of SuSE I bought. Prior to that I was running Red Hat. I think I bought it in 2003, but I never installed it. I was busy taking care of people in a nursing home (which I am still doing to this day). However, I still have the manuals, so if you have questions, I might be able to help.

From your messages, it appears to me that you have solved your current problem have you not?

    Hi Cool one,
    We gotta believe it.
    Who would make that up?
Yes you're right. - The panic is over.
but why not play on (will they move us into the coffee shop???)
I think we have an installation with bits missing as there are lot's of lists which appear with shady writing ie notionally possible but not right now (like my copy of Audacity which needs more plug-ins to get the more advanced features).
This isn't a problem to me as the SuSE computer (Mx2) is only to allow someone next door to access the internet. Even when it was for my general use most of the features seemed unnecessary or even in the way.
2003 sounds right as that was when we moved in here and another friend set us up with an Mx2 with SuSE 8.2 (and like yourself we haven't actually used it until now!!!!)
Many blessings and have fun on the Linux forum
    AlanJ
