There are a lot of editors available. If you want to go oldschool/function-over-form you can dive straight into Vim or Emacs. Both have a learning curve that might be more than you're willing to invest in.
For a straightforward graphical editor Kate, Kwrite and Gedit all have syntax highlighting and should work fine for you. Personally I'm a big fan of Kate and Gedit is very easy to use while concealing most of its power under a simple interfacce.

I have been satisfied with emacs myself but there are many different ones to choose from so I will not suggest that it is the best by any means, just one that I have used more than others.

Here's a listing of a few of the different text editors available:

I like vi or vim for command line, kwrite for KDE, and gedit for Gnome.
At the end of the day, they are all a large gathering of text editors, so you have to decide for yourself which one suits your tastes and needs best. Hope you find exactly what you are looking for.oz

As has already been mentioned before, there are lots of editors to choose from. My personal favourites are KATE, Komodo-Edit and Geany.
