    Weird sound problem

Hello, I'm a new user of SUSE Linux. I've encountered a problem that I'm unable to solve (I'm not sure if it's related to SUSE any way but I thought this is the place I should start). My sound does not seem to work at all; this is weird because it worked just yesterday, and I do not think I've made any changes that should have any effect on sound. Any sound cannot be heard, not even the test sound in sound settings (which worked even before I got rest of my audio working). Strangely enough, PulseAudio's sound monitor seems to detect all the sound that is supposed to be playing; it almost seems like that there's a mute setting on greater scale. True enough, I used the mute key of my laptop (IBM Thinkpad T30), but now it does not seem to respond in any way.

My question is, has anyone encountered a similar problem that does not relate to the muse system of the computer itself? Or if it's just my laptop, is there any way to manually reset the setting through Linux? For all I know, the system itself thinks that the sound works.

And there shouldn't be a problem in my audio equipment, unless there's a problem in both the integrated audio system and the sound output port (since my headphones do work (and worked on this system just fine before yesterday)).

All the help will be appreciated. Thank you already in advance.

Edit: I have absolutely no idea what happened, but now the sound seems to work just fine. I must've hassled something with that mute button.. sorry about this post.

Make sure you are using alsa by running as root alsaconf. If you are using the old OSS system it will only accept one input source at a time and can get blocked.
