    Software installation

    being a new user of Suse Linux, i want to know about installation procedures, is therea any kind of "exe" setup available in the installation packages, or i have to something extra to install any software.

    moreover i have downloaded DEB version of openoffice, can i install it on suse. secondly what is this DEB and RPM.

    the Linux gurus.... plz guide me.

    Regarding the forums search issue... can you provide a link to one of your searches so we can test it? I don't remember ever running into this problem before.

    openSUSE uses RPM packages and not DEB. To install openoffice, you need to click on the YaST icon or go to Menu -> System -> System -> YaST (this depends on your desktop and how the menus are setup). After that go to Software -> Management and choose the openoffice packages you want to install. Post back if you need more help.

    i am giving the link below as example, i have tried all the links that appeared in the search result, for each one the same reply of page cannot be displayed or u r not connected to intnernet. it happens to all searches i do.

    thanks for the link you provided for installation of packages, but it seems like its for other distros of linux and not for Suse, can i use any RPM technique listed in the link u have posted

    The easy way go to the menu->Yast(Admin settings)

    Yast-Software-Software Management

    The hard way read the instruction in a console window

    man rpm
    and or
    info rpm
