Resolution Problem Question
Will anyone who knows please help with the following problem:
Sometimes on my SuSe 9.1 machine the konqueror, kmail, firefox and thunderbird
windows garble the text and/or graphics in horizantal strips across the window contents. Sometimes it does it in the address area of the mail windows. Scrolling up and down in the given window usually fixes the moshed text, sometimes it takes multiple scrolls and it may fix the bad area but create a different bad area. I also see the garbling of the slider bar in the console windows.
I use this same monitor on a switch to other machines. The garbling never happens when switched to windows 98 or windows 2000.
I think the problem is in the XF86Config file. The monitor is a Slyvania F74 17". I have the original driver CD and manual that lists the horizontal and vertical ranges. I have set it with Sax2 and have verified that the ranges and names are in the file. The file says generated by SaX and not to modify. I had to make the only manual change I have done to the file is to lower the high ranges in both the vertical and horizontal fields. I did this to prevent all of the text in the graphic frames and other body text from being in a font size less than bible print.
I made these changes gradually stopping the X processes via a reboot until I came up with a frame font size I could see. I made backups along the way. Of course I could change font sizes in the body of documents, but the frame fonts was the issue. The manual says the ranges are Horiz 30-70 and Vert 55-120. I have pasted the pertinant file section below.
I have the SuSe 9.1 bible that came with the OS DVD, and it does not give an example of the file although it discusses it and talks about these frequency ranges. The word resolution is not in it's index.
The other question is about the modeline that I pasted in below. My manual says the max resolution is 1280x1024. I could change the 640x480 but I don't know what that string of numbers following it means. I could keep experimenting but
I thought I would ask.
Section "Monitor"
Option "CalcAlgorithm" "CheckDesktopGeometry"
HorizSync 30-50
Identifier "Monitor[0]"
ModelName "SYLVANIA F74"
VendorName "SYLVANIA"
VertRefresh 55-90
UseModes "Modes[0]"
EndSection
Section "Modes"
Identifier "Modes[0]"
Modeline "640x480" 51.43 640 680 744 832 480 481 484 482
EndSection
Thanks in advance,

Resolution Problem
I did change the 640x480 modes line to 1152X1024 that was in the supported range.
rebooted and It made every thing overly large again. Where the windows viewing is off screen. I changed it back. I wrote an email to the XF86 developers but no answer yet.
Maybe 8 meg of RAM on the video card is not enough or the 256 RAM in the system is not enough? Any thoughts from anyone? The interference/moshed bands is still happening.
