Do any members use a Dsl RS-232 ( serial port ) modem with Suse?
I want to upgrade my slow dial-up with a DSL modem that connects to the RS-232 serial port on my computer. After a lot of frustration hunting around and getting nowhere it dawned on me to ask in the Suse section of LinuxForums to see if anyone was using a DSL modem with their Suse os. Thank You!!

Seems like it would be easier to just install a network card (NIC).
RS232 was never designed for high speed.

Thank You, Gogalthorp!
I was under the impression that suse dial up had to go through the serial port.
Novell's Hardware compatibilty list for ISDN ( I have to look this up ) lists a Hamlet HISDNCI [3], [4] PCI card
The Wireless listing say to use a Maxon MM-55000SU
I have some reading and learning to do to try and figure this out.
Thanks again for the help!Linux registered user # 414321

DSL is not the same as dial out. It normally connects by NIC or USB. Serial ports do not have the bandwidth to handle the higher speeds

I don't know a thing about Suse, but that NIC should do just fine connecting to a DsL modem.

The connector looks like the one used in telephones but is a bit wider. The cable is CAT5. As I noted there are two ways to connect to DSL modems via NIC or via USB. The problem is that some modem only use one of those methods. Without knowing exactly what modem you are using we can not say exactly how to connect. In general if the modem is USB only you will need to connect using a USB cable plugged to a USB slot in your computer. If it uses a net connection only you will need to connect via a network cable plugged into you NIC. If it has both then it is your choice how to connect.
Note a DSL modem is normally provided by your ISP when you sign up for their service. You will have to sign up and pay for the DSL service with a service provider. You can't simply connect a DSL modem to your phone and expect it to work. You need to buy the service.

The Novell website states that there might be problems with DSL's using a USB connection; but that just about all ethernet connections work.
My ISP ( copper.net ) " rents " DSL modems; but I do not want to be going back and forth with them until they " rent " me a modem that works. I want to own my own DSL modem. If they do not want to provide me with DSL service, without renting me a modem, I'll just sign up with somebody else. I still have an open account at Budget dial-up that I just use just for email.Linux registered user # 414321
