    Adding Monitor Drivers to YaST

I just purchased a Samsung SyncMaster 2253BW (native resolution is 1680X1050). The closest monitor driver I see in YaST is SyncMaster 226BW. I tried selecting SyncMaster 226BW and the SaX2: X11 Configuration test fails. The Samsung website only has a windows version of the SyncMaster 2253BW driver?

1.) How do I add a new monitor driver in YAST?
2.) What manufacturers of LCD monitors are Linux friendly? What do others recommend?
3.) Am I limited to the monitors available in Yast?

    Thanks,

    -Mike

I've had good luck with View Sonic

In general it is best to find a monitor with similar specs and try it.

Model numbers may not have the same specs from the same maker and 226 may be a lot different then 2253.

I thought max resolution was overall dependant on your graphics card

YaST has always been very helpful and is one of the best tools for graphics configuration. However xorg pretty much looks after itself these days and doesn't need its setting spelled out for it. In fact it can actually hinder your efforts.

Almost all LCD monitors use a protocol called EDID which allows them to specify their own parameters and make X aware of their thresholds. I would suggest leaving YaST alone for the moment and letting xorg configure itself. Try backing up your xorg.conf and editing it to remove all monitor and modeline entries and letting xorg do the rest. This will require a restart of X.

Thanks for everyone's replies. I will try the suggestions mentioned.

Here is another bug that I am experiencing on another laptop ( SONY VAIO - VGNFS-630W).

I have installed OpenSUSE 11.0 (both GNOME and KDE 4.1) and OpenSUSE 10.3 (GNOME) and noticed that the extended desktop will not work with an external LCD for any of those operating systems. In YaST when I choose to test the settings, the extended desktop does not work even though I configured it with the SaX2: X11 configuration GUI. I tried different monitors (an HP 2025 LCD, a Optiquest V75 CRT monitor, and a Samsung SyncMaster 2253BW LCD). I can only get the extended desktop to work with the OpenSUSE11.0 GNOME LIVE CD and it works with all of the aforementioned monitors.

Does anyone have a theory on why the extended desktop only works with the Live CD?

    -Mike
