[SOLVED] Limewire doesn't connect, even after reistallation and disabling the firewal
Hey good people, wasup. I did a google with "Limewire RPM for openSUSE10.3 and downloaded the thing from the first link on the on the results page. Installation was a piece of cake.
However, it doesn't really seem to work. It opens fine but the signal tower thing (like in cell fones) never fills up. I've uninstalled limewire, restarted openSUSE 10.3, Installed the same RPM back, disabled the firewall & selected the option to prevent it from auto-starting on system restart, restarted again, but the problem persists. I'm a cow when it comes to linux but I genuinely want to learn. Had limewire been working, I wouldn't have had to be in Vista for writing this. I love sharing my stuff & limewire's my tool of choice. Searched for a solution on the web, but couldn't find anything other than suggestions to re-install. I'm missing my new operating system... I want to get back to openSUSE 10.3-it's just a re-start away-but not until I find a fix for the limewire thing. If anybody knows to fix this, please help me-i'd be greatful. A web-link to the solution would be fine. Thanking in anticipation. (I'm dialling up to the internet thru my cell fone's bluetooth using wvdial, getting a valid IP address for myself, & am able to browse on firefox with no issues. None)

hiya jheel, welcome to the forums.
I can't fix your limewire problem, mostly because my views of Limewire can't be printed here. I would suggest that you try GTK-Gnutella, which is probably available from the SUSE repos.I do not respond to private messages asking for Linux help, Please keep it on the forums only.

I can't really suggest a fix for Limewire, I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. I'd just like to second MikeTbob's idea of using GTK-Gnutella or one of the other clients. Limewire is just one frontend to the Gnutella network - which isn't specific to Limewire. There are plenty of frontends available with Limewire probably being the least trustworthy and would get my vote for the one most likely to get up to nasty things on your computer.
At one stage I was getting paid a few times a week to undo the damage it did on Windows computers spreading malware. While I'm not sure it's doing the same on Linux it has lost all of its credibilty in my eyes.
Some further reading on it, just remember that the network isn't exclusive to Limewire.

thanks big. well i've used limewire for years now and am kinda "over" used-to with it's user interface. Limewire's not the network, i can bet my computer on that, but it's definitely the interface i've been using since forever now, & seems like i'm losing my freedom to choose. I'd go with your suggestions, probably because,as it seems like from here, i don't have a choice. Thanks for your time big, i'm looking for an RPM of the software you mentioned. Thank you

Well, if you insist.
Try checking the settings of your router (if you have one), I usually have to open a port for most P2P software from the router setup page.
Check with your ISP, perhaps they block P2P traffic on certain ports only.I do not respond to private messages asking for Linux help, Please keep it on the forums only.

Hey Mike, good to see you back
And thanks for your reply, i am definitely in need for some help here. I'd explain this to make things easier, I use my cell fone's bluetooth and connect thru the EDGE services provided by my network operator. I don't have a router in this setup. Further, i'm able to connect to limeware and share my files and the monitor shows active uploads when i'm booted to Vista. To make sure, i just seached for "Country roads take me home" under audio, it's downloading at 31 K/s right now, as i'm typing this. Not very fast, but that's about the speed i expect from a cell fone. Shall I call up my mobile network operator? I guess they're not filtering from their end. My linux firewall is deactivated. Is there something that i shouldn't be doing? Or do you think i'm missing out on something? Any suggestion would be highly valued. Thanks for being patient with me, learning seems to be fun again. God bless.

Well, I'm kinda out of ideas, I really have no clue about using bluetooth and Cell Phones. I'm guessing like you are, if it works in Windows it should work in Linux too. Maybe another forum member with more experience could come along and help out here. Sorry buddy.
Can you surf the web at all while booted into Linux?I do not respond to private messages asking for Linux help, Please keep it on the forums only.

Most P2P applications have a setting to chose the ports that they use. Since it seems to work in windoze, check to see which ports it is set to. Then in Linux, set it to use the same ports.

Thanks all for your time. You've been great.
However, the the speed's too low. Please take a look at my other thread on the slow connection issue..
