Linux Won't Recognize my DSL Modem

I just installed SUSE 10 on my computer (Compaq PC). It won't connect to internet. I ran YAST2 and it did not even detect an unknown device. It was just blank.

I have DSL internet service through Verizon with a Westell 6100 modem.

Since it's dual boot, I know that Modem and internet service are working with Windows.

Any intelligent thoughts? Thanks so much!!

For better or for worse, I installed whatever is on the DVD I have. Once I get internet going, I'll be able to download and install whatever else is necessary. So perhaps it's a bit of a Catch-22, but there it is.

I just checked - it's SLED 10, i.e. SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. Sorry for the confusion. And thanks again for any help.

    Welcome to the forums!

It might be more of a problem between your network interface card and Linux, rather than the modem itself.

Determine what NIC you have and then make sure the proper module is loading for it. This is where a later version of Linux will often help (better hardware support).

Thank you!. How would I make sure I have the proper module? It appears my NIC is an HP EN1207D-TX

    Thanks!!

Linux generally does NOT support internal modems, almost never Winmodems-because of lack of information on internal coding. External modems have more success, look up 'Linux compatible hardware lists'. 11 still seems a dog's breakfast, but 10.3 is still nice.

Not sure, but I think that card uses the the realtek 8139 module.

You can check to see what modules are loaded with the lsmod command by going to a terminal and running:

    Code:
    lsmod
