Loading previously opened-but-not-closed programs upon restart..

    1. In one Suse machine, when I open text files in gedit and open office, and then shutdown the computer, and then start the computer again, I come back to the same position, and can see all the files open. But in another one, this doesn't happen. when the computer starts up again, previous windows are closed.

    a. why is this? How do I replicate the first behaviour in the second machine?

    b. Is it possible to configure the program to save my files automatically when the machine shuts down? During a power failure, UPS software shuts down the system when the battery is low, but I lose the data in documents I am not around when the PC is shutdown. How do I prevent this?

    Please guide..

It could be that one machine is set to save your sessions and the other one isn't. What desktop are you running? Is it the same on both machines?

    Desktop

I am using KDE in both cases. I wasn't aware of the possibility of saving sessions. How do I enable that?

Look at Kcontrol -> KDE Components -> Session Manager.
