Compiz, Gaming and OpenGL problems
yo everybody, wassup.
I'm on openSUSE 10.3 for a little more than a month now, and i've never had to boot to vista except for playing games. Installed it on a second desktop, which is about four years old. However, there are a couple of issues I haven't been able to solve on my own.
To start with, I'm unable to play any game in Linux, the system hangs when I attempt to run a game from the 10.3 install DVD.
“sysinfo:/” shows :-
Display Info
Vendor:
Intel Corporation
Model:
865 G
Driver:
intel (3D Support)
My system config: Intel D865 GBF systemboard, Intel P4@2.4GHz(Single core), 512MB DDR@333MHz. I do not have a gaming graphics card on this system, and it dynamically shares video memory from the RAM. In windows XP, I could play almost every game which can be played without a very high end graphics card, NFS underground2, AOE2, Return to castle wolfenstein, everything worked fine.
My question: CAN THIS SYSTEM BE USED TO PLAY THE VENDOR-PROVIDED GAMES WHICH COME FREE WITH openSUSE10.3?
Next, I cannot start compiz.
When I go to Start->applications->utilities->desktop->desktop effects, and click “enable”, the screen flashes, but compiz doesn't start. I've followed the compiz one click installer thing on a suse page. If I go to Start->Applications->System->Configuration->Xgl setup, and click on “Desktop effect with Xgl and compiz fusion”, I get - “KDE-su, Command “gnome-xgl-switch – enable -xgl ' not found.”
If I open KinfoCenter n click on openGL, I get:

Direct rendering 3D Accelerator Driver Vendor : Tungsten Graphics, Inc.

OpenGL Version : 1.3 Mesa 7.0.1
I've reserved 16MB memory for graphics, n AGP core aperture of 256 MB in BIOS.
My question: CAN COMPIZ BE ENABLED ON THIS SYSTEM? IF YES, HOW DO I DO THAT?
I've spent the last 15 years or so with windows, and am not very comfortable with the CLI. I'd request to treat me as a novice if someone's got a fix which would require me to use the terminal. Any help would be highly valued. A web link to the solution would be great as well. Thanks for reading. God bless.

My guess in no. You are running pretty slim in the graphics department.
I recommend you add a low to mid end graphics card. Also more main memory would not hurt.

I'd rather switch back to XP-runs pretty happily on my slim config. Thanks for your time. I'd use linux on the other computer. God bless.

Success
Success at last. I got compiz working on my thing without the upgrades!!
This is what I did:
Click on Start->Applications->System->Administer Settings(YaST).
On the window that appears, click on SYSTEM (LEFT pane). On the RIGHT window, click on "/etc/sysconfig editor"
Something like the windows "regedit" shows up.
Navigate to "Desktop->Display Manager->DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER"
Select Xgl from the drom down menu, click finish and close the YaST2 window. Restart KDE and enable desktop effects.
No performance issues (I have to disable Xgl to watch videos though).
Outperforms Vista. LONG LIVE LINUX
