    New to SUSE, some questions

    Hi,

About 4 months ago I did a mysql course and we had to choice to use Suse or Windows. Having an interest in Linux I opted for Suse and it immediately it became clear that it handled things a lot better than Red Hat (The only linux distro I have used)
Anyway, I finally installed Suse on my home pc and I have some questions.
I will be looking for the answers myself as well.

Yast looks like a great tool. I was wondering if it as a similar function such as yum, autorpm or the freebsd ports collection? Can I somehow see a list of all the packages available? I hope this makes sense

All you need to do is change the instalation source from the cd's to one of the SUSE mirrors.

This site will help you get apt/Synaptic for SuSE up and running.

    If you follow this URL
    http://<br /> http://www.suse.co.uk...t_mirrors.html

It gives a list of all the international Suse mirror sites. Just pick one local to you and add it into YAST.

Tried to do this but I get an error no matter which mirror I pick

Unable to create installation source from 'ftp://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/suse'
    Details:ERROR(Instsrc:E_Instsrc_on_media) Try again?

    Any ideas?

try this installation source, it's one i used for both SuSE 9.0 and 9.1.
    Server: 195.40.6.41
    Path on Server: pub/suse/i386/9.1

if it's not SuSE 9.1, but SuSE 9.0 ur using, change the 9.1 to 9.0 at the end of the path.

i have never had problems with this server.
