    Suse update server

I am a teacher and I use Suse for the lab. Our provider seems to block updates from time to time, perhaps while trying to hone their filter for the districts.

What I would like to be able to do is have a server here to download the updates to and let the lab systems pull down locally.

Could someone help me set this up?

    Thanks

    Kumado,
What version of SUSE are you using? SUSE has just realeased the Subscription Management Tool for SLES 10 SP2. You MAY be able to get this to work for openSUSE with a bit of work but I am not sure.

You can use YUM to pull the updates down and keep the RPM's then use YUM on each box to pull the updates from your server. Check out these 2 sites:
Paranoid Penguin - Using Yum for RPM Updates
Using yum to update and install applications. - LinuxQuestions.org

    Thanks Ennoil.
I'll have to read through the links.
Quick question though in case I do not see the answer there, if my lab machines are looking to my server for up dates, do they look through the update folder and "see" the newer files?
I have the update manager running on my laptop for instance, it will signal when there are updates available. Is that a service of Open Suse or is it just my machine periodically checking? I hope that makes sense.

    Thanks again.

I am pretty sure you would have to set up a cron job to periodically check the servers for updates. I am not sure how you could get the server to push that info out...Although you could write a script that would notify you every time updates are received on the server...

what version of Suse? SLES allows you to setup a local YOU server that can collect patches and allow local host to patch. Its not automatic patching but all the patches are local and you can open up firewall rules for a single machine instead of all.
