Can't use ports below 1024 in Thunderbird

I want to use Thunderbird for Live Mail and GMail but no matter what I try I can't open ports below 1024. That's not a problem for live mail as I just set it to a higher port but GMail apparently needs port 465. I can't find where this is being set, disabling the firewall entirely didn't even change things. Where about is this setting kept? Or is it just hard coded into the kernel?

ports below 1024 are reserved for OS, you can't use them, you shouldn't need to open ports to access e-mail from thunderbird

Well GMail doesn't seem to work while live mail does when I set it to a higher port so I figured it must be a port issue?
